Smith was born in San Diego, California to parents, Lon Smith and Constance Farmer, who were vaudeville performers and encouraged his interest in music. He began studying piano at age 8, and led a jazz band in high school and became a professional musician at 19 with the Johnny Richards band.
Later life and career
After playing with Richards in 1941 and spending 1943 to 1945 in the military, Smith worked with Les Paul (1946–1947) and Tommy Dorsey (1947–1949) before moving to Los Angeles and becoming a studio musician. Studio work took up much of his time: he worked as a staff musician for NBC and Warner Brothers, and for many years he was the musical director for Dinah Shore’s daytime talk show.
Smith recorded frequently both with his trios and as a soloist. In addition he is featured on work of artists such as Dizzy Gillespie, Anita O'Day, Buddy DeFranco, Louie Bellson, Steve Allen, Stan Kenton, Mel Tormé and others. He was the musical director on The Steve Allen Comedy Hour television show in the 1960s.
Between 1956 and 1978, Smith was active as a conductor and pianist for Ella Fitzgerald, although he continued to work with her until the early 1990s.
Smith authored a number of educational books and CDs, most of which focus on explaining his particular approach to jazz piano.
He also worked on film scores and his playing can be heard on the soundtracks of They Shoot Horses, Don't They? and Nickelodeon among some others.
Smith died on June 29, 2013, in Torrance, California of heart failure. He was 91 and performed in Southern California nightclubs, including The Velvet Turtle in Redondo Beach during the 1980s and the Terranea Resort hotel until his death. He is survived by his wife of 54 years Annette Warren; his daughter, actress Lauri Johnson; two sons, Gary and Paul; eight grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Paul Smith Trio & Quartet • The Big Men + The Sound of Music

The two enticingly swinging sessions brought together here find pianist Paul Smith in typically well-crafted form, with The Big Men a joyously engaging date in which he is heard performing solo or in a trio. Much skill, considerable feeling, and unceasingly ebullient energy transform this album into a thoroughly listenable program of modern jazz, throughout which his lines show strong classical influence and clear indication of his imposing compositional talent (Theme for Theda). The playing of the trio is crisp and knowing, and there are moments of brilliant musicianship by Smith with the fine support of Vinnegar and Levey, two swingers who keep the pulse vibrant.

On Richard Rodgers Broadway musical The Sound of Music, guitarist Barney Kessels contributions are consistently good, and the rhythm section is unfailingly solid and supportive. Smith, as leader, is utterly relaxed and swinging, while still managing to be viscerally creative in an excellent demonstration of the craftsmanship for which he was noted.

Buddy Bregman & His Orchestra • Swinging Kicks

 Review
by Scott Yanow
Best known as an arranger for singers and for commercial sessions, Buddy Bregman led one full-fledged jazz instrumental date, Swinging Kicks. Because many of the selections are brief (seven are under two minutes) and due to the intriguing titles, this seems a bit like a soundtrack to a film that was never made. However, few of the tracks seem truncated and there are some excellent solos along the way, particularly from Ben Webster, Conte Candoli, Herb Geller, Bud Shank, and Paul Smith. The personnel changes from cut to cut, ranging from a 19-piece big band with screaming trumpet playing from Maynard Ferguson and Conrad Gozzo to various combos, a Ben Webster/André Previn duet on "Kicks Is in Love," and a rapid workout for Paul Smith on "Go Kicks." Bregman uses some of the top West Coast jazz players and various musicians who were on Verve at the time, with Stan Getz making a guest appearance on "Honey Chile." Recommended.

Recomendado.

Brother Matthew • Brother Matthew With Eddie Condon's Jazz Band

Boyce Brown was an eccentric, a rare alto saxophonist who preferred to play freewheeling Chicago jazz, an erratic individual with some outlandish opinions and, ultimately, one of the very few monks who doubled (at least briefly) as a jazz musician! He became a professional musician when he was 17, playing with drummer Don Carter's band in Chicago. Brown picked up experience working with Benny Meroff, Wingy Manone (1933), Paul Mares (1934-1935), and Johnny's Original Playboys. Brown also led his own bands and recorded with Mares, Jimmy McPartland (1939), and Wild Bill Davison (some obscure titles in 1940). Brown was based in Chicago throughout his playing career, mostly leading his own bands th
roughout the '40s and early '50s.

In the fall of 1953 he adopted the name "Brother Matthew" and entered a monastery, taking his vows in February 1956. His only date as a leader was cut in Apr. 1956 with Eddie Condon's band and, although he looks a bit strange in his somber outfit while holding a sax (one can only imagine what Wild Bill Davison thought!), Boyce Brown was in brilliant form for what would be his last recording. He died of a heart attack less than three years later.
